SUMMARY:Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in Washington\, DC
DESCRIPTION:Routed West traces the flow and flourishing of quilts in the context of the Second Great Migration\, a mass movement of approximately five million African Americans from the rural South to cities in the North and West between 1940 and 1970 in search of a more equitable life. Many of the hundreds of thousands of migrants who arrived in California carried quilts for warmth and protection\, as containers for ancestral memory\, and as emblems of cultural survival. \n\n\n\nOrganized across several themes through nearly 80 artworks with kaleidoscopic patterns\, colors\, and forms\, Routed West offers a history of art through quilts’ joyful power in Black life. The quilts in the exhibition highlight artistic approaches such as repurposing work clothes\, improvisational piecing\, pattern-based quilting\, and tying\, practiced by those who would carry these works out of the South. Quilts by migrants from Arkansas\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, Oklahoma\, and Texas\, regions heavily represented in the westward movement of African Americans\, reflect the ways in which these works become cherished heirlooms. \n\n\n\nAs teachers\, nurses\, seamstresses\, truck drivers\, grocery store managers\, shipyard workers\, and other members of a laboring class\, a number of artists used quilt-making to reclaim time for themselves\, pursuing creative labor that could be meditative\, centering\, and liberating. Many of the quilts showcase the work of multiple generations of quiltmakers within families\, while works by contemporary artists illustrate the ways they keep traditions of African American quilting alive today. The exhibition is part of the museum’s multi-faceted participation in Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026\, an initiative of Craft in America. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOther Quilt Shows in Maryland and WDC\n\n\n\n \n\n\nFalling Into Quits – A Harvest of Quilts Show in Bel Air MD - October 9\, 2026Baltimore Heritage Quilt Guild EXPO - April 17\, 2027Celebration of Quilts in Gaithersburg MD - April 23\, 2027NeedleChasers of Chevy Chase 2027 Quilt Show  Sew Much Whimsy - October 8\, 2027Autumn Ribbons Quilt Show in Jarrettsville MD - November 12\, 2027

SUMMARY:Houston Joy of Quilts Quilt Show in Stafford TEXAS
DESCRIPTION:The Quilt Guild of Greater Houston (QGGH) proudly announces its premier biennial quilt show\, Houston Joy of Quilts\, taking place January 29–30\, 2027 at the Stafford Centre in Stafford\, Texas. This special event marks the Guild’s Golden Jubilee—50 years of quilting\, community\, and service. Founded in 1976 by Karey Bresenhan\, founder of the International Quilt Festival\, QGGH is the original quilt guild of Texas and one of the largest in the state. \n\n\n\nFor more than three decades\, the Guild’s biennial Houston Joy of Quilts show has served as its primary fundraising event\, supporting both charitable outreach and the advancement of quilting as an art form. As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization\, QGGH donates more than 600 handmade quilts each year to charities across Texas\, including Sleep in Heavenly Peace\, Hill Country Flood Relief\, Halo House\, CASA\, Texas Children’s Hospital\, Houston Hospice\, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Over the past 50 years\, the Guild has donated more than 10\,000 quilts\, providing comfort and care to those in need. Since 2015\, the show has been hosted at the Stafford Centre and continues to be a fully volunteer-led event\, featuring quilts handcrafted by Guild members. Every dollar raised directly supports the Guild’s mission. \n\n\n\nThe 2027 show will feature more than 300 quilts on display\, with awards presented by renowned Association of Quilt Judges (AQHJ) judges Jackie Rushing and Marilyn Harding\, recognizing excellence in craftsmanship\, design\, and artistry. Attendees will also enjoy a unique shopping experience\, with local and U.S.-based vendors alongside handcrafted items created by Guild members. \n\n\n\nA highlight of this year’s event will be a live and online auction of vintage\, antique\, and new quilts on January 29\, 2027 from 5-7:30 p.m.\, led by Dana Balsamo\, a nationally recognized quilt appraiser\, antique textile expert\, and professional auctioneer. Dana has appeared as a textile appraiser on Antiques Roadshow\, bringing her expertise to a national audience. She is also a respected lecturer on quilt history\, fabric dating\, and textile preservation. \n\n\n\nIn honor of the Guild’s Golden Jubilee and the 250th anniversary of the United States\, QGGH is undertaking two special initiatives: • Creation of 50 Quilts of Valor\, to be awarded to veterans in August 2026 • Golden Jubilee commemorative quilts\, featuring gold and white designs celebrating 50 years of impact Houston Joy of Quilts showcasing: Human impact at scale — Over 10\,000 quilts donated to charities across Texas \, with more than 600 each year benefiting hospitals\, veterans\, children\, and families in crisis across Texas A 50-year legacy milestone — Celebrating one of Texas’s oldest and most impactful nonprofit guilds during its Golden Jubilee year Local volunteers making a statewide difference — Hundreds of Houston-area residents contributing time\, talent\, and resources to serve others Honoring our Country and our Veterans— The creation of 50 Quilts of Valor aligns with the 250th anniversary of the United States\, honoring veterans and service Art\, tradition\, and preservation — Showcasing quilting as both a living art form and an important part of American cultural heritage National-level expertise in Houston — Featuring recognized judges and auctioneer Dana Balsamo of Antiques Roadshow \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOther Quilt Shows in Texas\n\n\n\n \n\n\nPiecemakers’ Annual Quilt Show in Corsicana TX - October 5\, 2026Kerens Cotton Harvest Festival Quilt Show in Kenens TX - October 16\, 2026Texas Star Quilters Guild Quilt Show in Canton Texas - November 6\, 2026Houston Joy of Quilts Quilt Show in Stafford TEXAS - January 29\, 2027Kaleidoscope of Color Show in Robstown / Corpus Christie TX - February 5\, 202745th Annual Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show Quilt Show in South Padre Island TX - February 12\, 2027Scrap Therapy Biennial Quilt Show in Cypress TX - February 26\, 2027Scrap Therapy Quilt Show in Cypress TX - February 26\, 2027Highland Lakes Quilt Festival in Burnet TX - February 26\, 2027BTQ Guilds’ Silver 25th Quiltversary Show in Houston TX - February 27\, 2027Chisholm Trail Quilt Guild Quilt Show in Taylor TX - May 7\, 2027Hill Country Quilt Guild Show in Kerrville TX - May 29\, 2027All Roads Lead to Texas Quilt Show in Temple TX - July 9\, 2027Brazos Blue Bonnet Quilt Guild Quilt Show in Bryan TX - September 10\, 2027Greater San Antonio Quilt Show in San Antonio TX - September 24\, 2027
